Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
"Truly exceptional technology in very human hands"
What is it and what is it used for?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that uses magnetic fields to modulate brain activity. During treatment, patients sit comfortably while a TMS device is placed over the head, generating a magnetic field that penetrates the skull and influences neural activity. This approach is used to address conditions such as movement disorders, depression, cognitive decline, pain syndromes (like fibromyalgia), migraines, and tinnitus.
Around 70% of patients with neurological conditions treated with TMS experience improvement when the therapy is combined with other treatments. These results are supported by scientific evidence demonstrating its effectiveness across various conditions.
TMS requires no surgery or anesthesia and can be performed in an outpatient clinical setting.
Key facts about TMS:
• Intended for individuals who have not responded adequately to conventional treatments or who need additional therapeutic support.
• Can complement medication and other therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.
• Used to treat multiple neurological and psychiatric conditions, though effectiveness and specific applications vary by diagnosis.
How does it work?
TMS modulates brain activity using magnetic fields. During each session, magnetic pulses are delivered to specific areas of the brain associated with the patient’s condition, helping to improve symptoms in many cases.
Is it safe? Is there a risk of having a seizure?
Yes, TMS is a safe procedure and offers the following advantages:
Painless: It is a non-invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia.
No hospitalization required: The treatment is brief and performed on an outpatient basis.
Quick recovery: Each session is short, and patients can easily resume their daily activities afterward.
The risk of seizures is very low—less than 1%—and has only been reported in cases with additional predisposing factors. This risk can be further minimized through proper pre-treatment evaluation.
Is there an association in Mexico that endorses the use of TMS?
Yes. In Mexico, the highest authority for the endorsement and certification of TMS is the Mexican Society of Neuromodulation (SMN). All professionals involved in your treatment are certified by the SMN.

Am I a candidate for TMS therapy?
There are multiple indications for TMS; however, every case requires pre- and post-treatment evaluation by a multidisciplinary team.
Absolute contraindications are rare (for example, the presence of metallic material within the brain); however, several relative contraindications should be discussed during consultation.

Is this a treatment for me?
If conventional treatments have not been effective, TMS is a proven option for improving symptoms in resistant conditions, with studies supporting its effectiveness in such cases.
