Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

"Truly exceptional technology in very human hands"

What is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)?

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a safe and effective clinical-surgical treatment that involves the implantation of electrodes in specific areas of the brain. These electrodes generate electrical impulses that regulate abnormal signals, improving the symptoms of certain neurological disorders.

What conditions can be treated?

Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and Tourette syndrome, among others.

Am I a candidate?

To determine if you are a suitable candidate for DBS, a thorough evaluation by a multidisciplinary team is required. This includes reviewing your medical history, symptoms, and conducting specific tests. In many cases, a levodopa challenge test (crucial for Parkinson’s patients) will be performed to predict the effectiveness of DBS. If your symptoms are resistant to other treatments and you have no major contraindications, you could be a good candidate.

What will happen during the surgery?

During the surgery, an expert neuroanesthesiologist will keep you awake, but pain-free and calm. Then, a skilled neurosurgeon will place electrodes in your brain and a pulse generator (similar to a pacemaker) in your chest. The surgery is performed in two stages: first, the implantation of the electrodes, and then the placement of the pulse generator.

What is the microlesional effect?

The microlesional effect is a temporary improvement in symptoms that some patients experience immediately after surgery, before the pulse generator is activated. It is caused by minimal injury to the brain tissue during the implantation of the electrodes.

What do we mean by "programming the DBS"?

After the surgery, the pulse generator will be programmed to optimize the electrical impulses. This programming is tailored to your individual needs and may require several visits to achieve the best results.

Neuropsychiatrist

Neurogeneticist

Neurorehabilitation specialist

Neuropsychologist

Biomedical engineer
